Government, Huawei Train 180 Youth in Tech to Boost Rural Economy in Baringo

The government, in collaboration with global tech giant Huawei, has successfully completed a four-week digital training program for 180 youth in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, aimed at enhancing rural economic development through technology.

The initiative, conducted through the Huawei DigiTruck in partnership with the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy, equipped participants with vital ICT skills and devices, preparing them to harness the digital space for entrepreneurial and developmental goals.

During the commissioning ceremony at Kabimoi Vocational Training Centre, Cabinet Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, William Kabogo, emphasized the transformative potential of digital literacy in rural communities. He noted that the project, which has so far trained over 6,000 youth nationwide, is designed to foster innovation and technological interest among Kenya’s youth — who represent 70% of the population.

“To become a middle-income country, we must decisively empower our youth with ICT skills,” Kabogo stated. “Technology is not just a tool but a catalyst for sustainable development and economic empowerment.”

As part of the training, participants were paired with business mentors to help them market their ideas online, build digital startups, and gain entrepreneurial insight. Among the graduates, Keithlyn Jerono shared her vision of using her new skills to support local healthcare education and promote village farm produce to broader markets. “I have learned that computers are not just machines; they are tools for innovation and collaboration,” she said.

Kibet Korir, an animal health graduate, plans to create a website to educate farmers on livestock diseases and provide access to market information.

ICT Principal Secretary John Tanui reiterated the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide through public-private partnerships. “Our goal is to extend digital literacy to every corner of the country to ensure inclusive economic growth,” he said.

Huawei Kenya’s Deputy CEO, Stephen Zhang, highlighted the program’s focus on financial literacy, online safety, and business incubation. He praised the Huawei DigiTruck, a mobile, solar-powered tech lab, for reaching underserved areas in 39 counties so far.

“This initiative continues to ignite innovation among youth and women in remote communities,” Zhang affirmed.

The program is seen as a significant step toward achieving Kenya’s digital inclusion goals and propelling youth into the competitive global tech landscape.
