Government Invests Billions in ICT to Boost Kenyan Brand Competitiveness

The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s global and regional brand competitiveness through strategic investments in digital infrastructure and innovation.

Speaking at the 2025 Brand Africa 100 Awards Ceremony, Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke announced major ICT projects aimed at expanding digital access and supporting the growth of local brands.

Key among these is the deployment of 2,500 kilometers of fibre-optic cable across 19 counties, including Kwale, at a cost of KSh 5 billion, funded through the Universal Service Fund (USF). The initiative is part of the government’s broader Digital Superhighway Programme, which seeks to improve connectivity in underserved regions.

“Kenya stands proudly as a beacon of innovation and excellence within Africa,” said Isaboke. “According to recent rankings, 25% of the most admired brands in Kenya are local, second only to the United States. China follows at just 9%.”

He noted that improved digital infrastructure would enable more regions to participate in the digital economy, giving local brands better opportunities to grow and compete globally.

In addition, the government is investing KSh 2.8 billion in the establishment of 47 Centres of ICT Excellence—one in each county—and 1,450 ICT Hubs across all wards. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Konza Technopolis Development Authority and aims to equip youth and entrepreneurs with digital skills and innovation platforms.

These efforts are expected to support brand growth, create jobs, and position Kenya as a hub for technology-driven development and global brand influence.
