Government Reaffirms Multi-Agency Strategy to Tackle Drug Abuse, Strengthen Health Systems

By Michelle Ndaga

The Government has reiterated its commitment to a coordinated, multi-agency approach in addressing drug and substance abuse, bringing together the Ministry of Health, NACADA, law enforcement agencies, county governments, and faith-based organizations.

Speaking on Radio Citizen’s Jambo Kenya show on Wednesday morning, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni said the strategy prioritizes prevention, rehabilitation, and community sensitization to protect young people and secure the country’s future.

The PS also highlighted the crucial role of the Social Health Authority (SHA) in the roll-out of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), assuring Kenyans that affordable healthcare will be delivered without financial hardship.

She stressed that accountability, transparency, and equity are embedded within SHA systems to foster public trust.

On primary healthcare, Ms. Muthoni pointed to the success of the Community Health Program, which has deployed more than 100,000 trained and equipped Community Health Promoters (CHPs) nationwide.

These workers provide households with health education, preventive services, and linkages to health facilities.

Addressing the country’s readiness for health emergencies, the PS said the Ministry, in collaboration with counties and partners, has strengthened disease surveillance and rapid response systems.

She urged Kenyans to remain vigilant, promptly report suspected cases, and adhere to preventive health practices.
