On Thursday, January 23, the Kenyan government urged the public to contribute ideas for combating the alarming increase in femicide cases across the country.
In a statement, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura urged support for President William Ruto’s newly formed task force on the issue.
“Let’s work together to support this task force and share solutions to effectively combat femicide,” Mwaura said, expressing sympathy to the families of the 15 women reported killed since the beginning of the year.
Mwaura condemned the growing trend of femicide and emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims.
The tragic increase in femicide cases has caused widespread concern. In response, President Ruto established a 42-member Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on January 10, 2024.
Dr. Nancy Baraza leads the group, which will review existing laws, investigate the rise in violence, and propose stronger measures to prevent future femicides. The task force includes experts like Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, and journalist Franklin Wallah.
The committee’s final report, due within 90 days, will focus on improving legal frameworks, increasing survivor support, and ensuring better investigation and prosecution.
These steps aim to protect women from further harm, as statistics show that over 500 women have been victims of femicide in Kenya since 2016.
As the country grapples with this crisis, the government encourages Kenyans to take an active role in finding solutions to the growing violence against women.
