Government Reviews Progress in Agriculture, Highlights Boost in Food Production

By Michelle Ndaga

The government has reported major progress in the agriculture and livestock sector, citing improved productivity and expanded support for farmers and pastoralists.

In a meeting held this morning, Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe reviewed key achievements, including the success of the Fertilizer Subsidy Programme.

The initiative has significantly boosted the production of maize, edible oils, rice, and cotton, contributing to enhanced national food security.

The livestock value chain has also recorded notable growth, with increased milk production and expanded market opportunities.

Additionally, the De-Risking, Inclusion, and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies (DRIVE) Programme has provided livestock insurance coverage to more than 238,000 pastoralist households, protecting livelihoods against drought and climate shocks.

Officials said the government remains committed to strengthening agricultural productivity, supporting farmers with affordable inputs, and ensuring sustainable livestock development to drive economic growth and reduce food insecurity.
