Government To Settle Burial Costs For Mwingi Victims

The national government and the Kitui county administration, according to Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, would support all of the relatives of those slain in the Enziu River disaster on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Ngilu told Citizen TV that the Ministry of Interior, through the National Disaster Management Authority, was working to assist families in burying their lost relatives.

"The national government, through the Ministry of Interior's National Disaster Management Authority, will provide personalized support to all of the families affected by the disaster," Ngilu added.
"As a county, we will also support the families who have lost loved ones."

On the other hand, the governor distanced her administration from the tragic bridge’s renovation project, which began in 2019 but has yet to be completed.

"That work had already been contracted a few years ago, and the contractor quit after doing a bad job."

Ngilu also promised Kenyans that the government will now take the bridge’s reconstruction seriously, stating that planning for its revival had already begun.

"I believe the government will... take more significant effort to ensure that the bridge does not become a death trap." I'm confident it will be completed. She remarked, "The national government is already in it."

The bus they were riding in plunged into the Enziu River on their way to a wedding ceremony on Saturday.

33 people were killed, four of them being children.
