Government To Upgrade Prisons

The government will spend more money to make jails and other correctional facilities more welcoming to convicts.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i said the state has set aside more funds to provide critical facilities to the state’s 53,000 inmates as part of a welfare improvement program involving business partners and well-wishers.

“Prisoners are our neighbours. They are transported to prison not to die, but to be reintegrated into society. As a result, all persons who go through this process must have their rights protected and their safety ensured.

The CS was speaking after giving a variety of Christmas comfort items to the 3,000 inmates of the Naivasha Maximum Security Prison.

Prisoners will be considered for COVID-19 booster shots, according to Dr. Matiang’i.

Commissioner of Prisons Brig (Rtd) John Warioba and Interior Chief Administrative Secretary Winnie Guchu were among those who saw the event.
