Council of Governors (CoG) Chair Ahmed Abdullahi has accused Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei of benefiting from alleged corruption from past governments , in a sharp exchange following recent events at the Senate.
“I was not Governor for the last five years, Cherargei was a Senator….He was a beneficiary of the corruption in this county in those five years…. so the taps have been closed now under my watch and that’s why he is frustrated,” Abdullahi said.
He further alleged that Senator Cherargei used to turn a blind eye to county illegalities in exchange for financial gain.
The remarks came amid rising tensions between governors and the Senate, following an incident in which Samburu Governor Lelelit Lati was confronted outside Parliament after appearing in relation to summons by the County Public Accounts Committee.
The Council of Governors has since condemned the incident involving Governor Lati, describing it as an affront to constitutional order and the dignity of the Office of the Governor.
In a statement, the Council termed the alleged assault “shocking and unacceptable,” arguing that such conduct undermines institutional decorum and the rule of law.
The standoff highlights ongoing friction between county governments and the Senate over oversight, accountability and the conduct of public officials.
