Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has underscored the critical importance of climate resilience in agriculture during his address at the 6th edition of the Kitui Agricultural Show and Trade Fair.

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd, Dr. Malombe highlighted the pressing challenges posed by global climatic change, which have significantly impacted the agricultural sector in Kitui County.

In his speech, the Governor pointed out that extreme weather events, erratic rainfall patterns, and declining agricultural productivity have increased the vulnerability of rural communities dependent on farming.

He emphasized the urgent need for the county to adopt climate smart agricultural practices to mitigate these challenges.

“The agricultural sector has been facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change,” Dr. Malombe stated. “The ‘Kitui Promise’ is our commitment to shift away from over-reliance on rain-fed agriculture. We are implementing various interventions to transform our agricultural practices in alignment with my vision for a sustainable Kitui.”

The Governor reiterated his government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for farmers and traders to engage in climate smart agriculture value chains. He noted that in the past year, the county government has successfully disseminated agricultural technologies and advisory services to an impressive 236,659 farmers.

“By equipping our farmers with the right tools and knowledge, we are not just addressing the immediate food security concerns; we are investing in the sustainable future of our agricultural sector,” he added.

Furthermore, Dr. Malombe addressed the need for the county government to refine and rebrand its strategies, ensuring that they effectively meet the expectations of the people of Kitui.

He emphasized that clear communication of these strategies is essential for the overall growth and development of the agricultural sector in the county.

Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu praised the county government’s efforts in organizing the agricultural show, recognizing its significant impact on the region’s farming community.

“The revival of this agricultural show is a testament to the innovative spirit of our county. It provides a platform for farmers to showcase their products and learn from one another,” said Mulu.

Supporting the Governor’s vision, Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kinengo Katisya commended Dr. Malombe for his effective leadership and commitment to rejuvenating the county’s agricultural framework.

“Under your leadership, we are witnessing tangible improvements in the livelihoods of our people. Your focus on climate-smart agriculture is particularly commendable,” Katisya remarked.
