Governor Nyongo Summoned Over ‘Misused’ COVID Funds

The Senate has summoned Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o to answer questions from the Auditor General about the alleged abuse of COVID-19 funds. – By Gerald Gekara.

“The Standing Committee on Health summons you to appear before the Committee virtually through the zoom online meeting platform on Friday 30th April at 9am. A secure link will be shared with your office ahead of the sitting,” A statement by Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye reads.

This is the second time the governor is appearing, after failing to show up on Tuesday 20th April.

Nyong’o has been warned by Nyegenye that if she does not attend the meeting or send the necessary paperwork, she will face sanctions.

“In accordance with the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act, the Committee will levy a fine of not more than Ksh 500,000 on you or order your arrest.”

Embu, Homa Bay, Murang’a, Busia, Kakamega, Meru, Bomet, Kisii, Bungoma, Nairobi Metropolitan Service, Trans Nzoia, and Lamu are among them.

The study shows that the counties broke procurement rules, awarded tenders to select companies, and made dubious payments, potentially resulting in the loss of billions of dollars in public funds.
