Governor Probed Over Ksh 6.9 Billion ‘Postponed’ Projects

Nairobi County administration is under fire for postponed and badly executed projects totaling Sh6.9 billion.

While pointing the finger at the Ann Kananu-led administration, Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu noted that some of the projects had double tenders issued as well as contract variations.

She revealed the rot in an audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, which was presented to the Nairobi County Assembly last week and is being used by the County Assembly to launch inquiries into the projects and contract awards.

According to the auditor’s report, road, transportation, and public works projects totaling Sh4.67 billion, as well as ward development projects worth Sh418.6 million, have been postponed.

The Nairobi County Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) launched an investigation into road contractors and procurement officers on Thursday for failing to deliver on projects despite payments.

According to the Wilfred Odalo-led committee, an examination of various reports revealed that projects totaling Sh1.8 billion in contract value had stalled.

City Hall’s implementation of development projects, particularly ward development projects, has been a source of contention between City Hall and ward representatives (MCAs).

Since 2014, the representatives have accused the Executive of leading them in circles over the execution of ward-based projects that have stopped due to delayed funds.

Nairobi residents have frequently missed out on such projects worth billions of shillings each fiscal year.
