Governor Sakaja Confirms 4,000 Green Army Workers as Permanent and Pensionable Staff

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced the formal absorption of 4,000 Green Army workers into permanent and pensionable positions, in what is being hailed as the biggest public hiring in the sector since 1987.

The Green Army, a youth-driven workforce tasked with cleaning, greening, and maintaining Nairobi’s public spaces, has until now been comprised largely of casual laborers. The move secures long-term job stability, pension benefits, and improved working conditions for thousands of young residents.

“From seeds of hope to pillars of promise, our young people in the Green Army now stand tall,” Sakaja said, emphasizing that the milestone fulfills a key manifesto pledge. “Four thousand dreams have been fulfilled, a manifesto honored, and a future secured.”

The initiative is expected to not only enhance livelihoods but also improve service delivery and environmental standards in the capital. It has been widely praised as a significant step toward youth empowerment and economic stability in Nairobi.
