Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has urged women to take on more leadership roles in business and politics.
Governor Waiguru stressed the importance of applying for and competing for positions in leadership at the ‘Ladies in Leadership’ breakfast conversation held at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club on Saturday.
“While some people are born with inherent leadership abilities, such traits must be nurtured in order to fulfill one’s purpose. “Once again, there is a great need for those who want to lead to come out and put themselves forward for various positions,” the governor said.
Governor Waiguru urged women to have the courage to pursue their dreams and not give up if success does not come quickly. She talked about her experiences climbing the corporate and political ladders, emphasizing how her desire to transform public service delivery drove her to take on top leadership roles.
The women in the session, who came from a variety of corporate and public sectors, had open discussions about what motivates them to pursue positions in social, political, and corporate leadership. They also discussed what they need to do to remain resilient and purposefully relevant amid many challenges facing women in leadership.
Governor Waiguru stressed the need for seasoned women leaders to mentor younger ones, adding that she is a firm campaigner of the 2/3rd gender rule and has mentored many women and put others in positions where they can sharpen their skills for higher positions.
