Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has been declared the winner in the Gichugu constituency after her opponent ordered a recount.
Independent candidate for governor Wangui Ngirici alleged that the vote had been tampered with, prompting the call for a recount.
With 36,675 votes to Ngirici’s 21,285 votes, Waiguru was declared the winner.
After the recount, Waiguru urged Ngirici to respect the outcome of the vote, claiming that Kenya is a democratic nation.
“I want to challenge my opponent to accept the voice of the people and give another stab into the governorship in the next elections,” Waiguru said.
An incensed Ngirici claimed that, along with Gichugu, they were also tallying the results from the three other constituencies of Ndia, Mwea, and Kirinyaga central.
These three other constituencies aligned with the IEBC’s. Wangui asserted that 6,000 more votes were added for Waiguru.
