Governor Wavinya Criticizes MPs’ Bursary Allocations, Launches Ksh.120M Education Fund

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has faulted bursary allocations by Members of Parliament, arguing they are inadequate to address the increasing educational needs of students nationwide.

Speaking at Ivumbuni Primary School in Mumbuni North Ward during the official launch of the 2024/2025 county bursary program, Governor Ndeti welcomed a new agreement that allows county governments to participate in bursary disbursement. She emphasized that counties, which generate their own revenue, have a duty to reinvest in the education of their youth.

“MPs do give bursaries, but that alone is not enough. Counties must also step in to ensure that no child is left behind due to lack of school fees,” Ndeti said.

The governor unveiled a Ksh.120 million bursary fund aimed at supporting needy students across the county. She revealed that more than 92,500 learners have already benefited under her administration, with selection done through a fair and inclusive process to prioritize deserving cases.

Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi praised the initiative, calling it a “long-term investment in the future of Machakos.” He and Governor Ndeti urged school administrators to allow students to remain in class even if bursary disbursements are delayed.

The move underscores growing efforts by devolved units to enhance access to education and bridge funding gaps at the grassroots level.
