The Council of Governors (CoG) has demanded the immediate withdrawal of alleged arrest warrants and any coercive measures targeting governors, after the attempted arrest of Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja.
In a media briefing on Tuesday, March 31, the CoG chair, Ahmed Abdullahi, stated that any action against governors should be based on verified facts rather than political or personal interests.
“We demand the immediate withdrawal of the alleged warrants of arrest or any coercive measures against governors, pending an impartial determination,” Ahmed stated.
The governors condemned the attempted arrest of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Monday, March 30, saying the decision deepens mistrust and undermines the rule of law.
In that regard, CoG called on the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to carefully check the facts and truthfulness of any allegations or cases against governors before taking any actions.
“We also urge the Office of the Inspector General to establish the veracity of the matters to avoid miscarriage of justice or the misuse of legal processes for political or personal gain,” he added.
