The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the completion of the 19-kilometre Rusinga Ring Road, improving transport, trade, and access across Rusinga Island.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 10, Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency, Eliud Owalo said the road is expected to ease movement for residents and support economic activity on Lake Victoria.
“This is the first tarmac road ever built on this island, and it will undoubtedly be a game changer. Rusinga has beautiful beaches, abundant fish stocks, and its proximity to Ruma National Park will now make it a top tourist destination,” he said.
The Ksh1.3 billion KURA road forms part of the wider 480km Lake Victoria ring-road network.
At the same time, Owalo reviewed the Ksh216 million Kabunde Airstrip Runway Rehabilitation, which is 65 per cent complete and expected to improve regional air connectivity once finished.
In Rachuonyo West, he led officials in evaluating the Ksh4 billion 67KM Kadel–Alara–Pala–Kanyadhiang–Kilusi–Opanga–Ramba Road, currently at 7 per cent progress.
The delegation also assessed the Homa Bay County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) in Riwa, Rangwe, a Ksh498 million value-addition project supported by a 3km Ksh424 million KeNHA access road.
The park is 59 per cent complete, while the access road stands at 40 per cent.

Owalo and his team also visited the Rusinga Ring Road in Mbita Sub-county, which is 99 per cent complete.
This comes a week after the Ministry of Roads and Transport has announced the official opening of the newly completed 66-kilometre Ngong-Suswa Highway.
In a statement on Wednesday, December 3, the State Department for Roads said the project was designed to improve mobility out of Nairobi through Ngong and enhance connections to towns along the route.
“The 66km Ngong-Suswa Highway is now open! A smoother, safer, and more direct route out of Nairobi through Ngong – perfect for travelers, transporters, and road-trip lovers.
“Scenic views, faster connections, and fresh opportunities along the corridor,” the statement read.
