Gov’t Eager to Achieve Food Security Through Agricultural Productivity and Community Collaboration

A committed team led by Deputy Director Mr. Festus Kani of the State Department for Irrigation (SDI) inspected the ongoing construction at the Nguruman irrigation scheme in Magadi Ward, Kajiado County, with the goal of increasing food security through agricultural productivity and community collaboration.

With supplemental irrigation, the project is anticipated to assist about 1,500 farmers by greatly increasing agricultural productivity over 800 hectares upon completion.

Along with riparian pegging and related hydrological studies, the project’s extensive scope also includes a confirmatory survey and design review.

In addition, headwork construction and restoration, pipeline and intake protection, bush removal, excavation, pipe laying, and the installation of appurtenances along mainlines and infield systems are all included.

The community brought up three main issues throughout the consultation. In order to better meet their objectives, they first asked for a further examination of the project’s components, with a focus on the integration of canals to help customers near the intake.

Secondly, they advocated for employing more local workers during the implementation phase.

Thirdly, they demanded a thorough analysis of the total contract amount. It was decided that a participative approach would be used consistently all the way through project execution.

Members of the CIT and the technical team will examine the scope’s expandable and adjustable portions in order to satisfy the needs of the beneficiaries.

Rerouting portions of the pipeline, building substantial protective works for areas vulnerable to flooding, and creating a hybrid system with canals are important changes.

Additionally, the contractor was urged to think about hiring more local workers while the project was being completed.

The Nguruman Irrigation Scheme has the potential to become a vital component of Kajiado County’s agricultural growth and local empowerment by tackling these issues and encouraging community involvement.
