The government has announced the launch of a nationwide registration drive for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and petroleum businesses.
The exercise will begin on Tuesday, April 3, 2023, and will last until Friday, April 14, 2023.
The registration drive is a joint effort of the State Departments of Internal Security and National Administration and Petroleum.
It will be carried out by National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) in collaboration with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority in all sub-counties (EPRA).
The exercise’s goal is to improve the management and regulation of the country’s LPG and petroleum businesses, as well as to ensure that they comply with safety regulations.
Data and information will be collected from all LPG and petroleum businesses, including service stations, dealers, traders, distributors, and manufacturers, as part of the exercise.
The registration drive, according to a press release issued by the two Principal Secretaries, Dr. Raymond Omollo and Mr. Mohamed Liban, will help to reduce the risk of accidents and protect the public from substandard products and services.
They also stated that the government remains committed to ensuring all citizens’ safety and security, as well as the effective regulation of the petroleum sector.
They urged all LPG and petroleum operators to register and warned that unregistered LPG and petroleum businesses would be considered non-operational after the registration period.
With over 1,800 service stations operated by more than 70 registered oil marketing companies, LPG and petroleum are among the most widely used fuels in Kenya.
LPG demand in Kenya increased from 93,600 metric tonnes in 2012 to 320,909 metric tonnes in 2020, with an expected increase to 800,000 tonnes by 2030.
