The Ministry of Energy is set to host a public participation forum on Monday, September 16, to gauge public sentiment on the proposed private partnership with Adani Energy Solutions Limited.Â
The multinational corporation is in talks with the government to take over Kenya’s electricity transmission network, a move that has stirred significant opposition among Kenyans.
If approved, Adani would manage electricity transmission across the country, replacing Kenya’s state-run transmission company.
This decision follows persistent blackouts, which the government attributes to outdated infrastructure.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi highlighted that the government had greenlit a Ksh117 billion proposal from Adani to upgrade the transmission network but noted the state’s financial constraints necessitated private sector involvement.
However, the potential deal has drawn sharp criticism from religious leaders and sections of the public, with many questioning why the government would hand over critical infrastructure to a foreign entity.
Religious leaders urged the government to listen to citizens’ concerns, calling for the prioritization of local businesses.
Despite the ongoing debate, the government remains committed to engaging Kenyans through public participation before finalizing the deal.
