Green Park Underpass Nears Final Phase as Nairobi Moves Toward Pedestrian-Centric Urban Design

The Green Park underpass, a pivotal infrastructure project located at the busy junction of Uhuru Highway and Haile Selassie Avenue, is approaching completion.

With construction now 88% finished, the Ksh.2 billion development marks a significant step in reshaping how pedestrians navigate Nairobi’s urban core.

Led by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in collaboration with China Road and Bridge Corporation, the project is set to ease congestion and create a safer passage for foot traffic entering the Central Business District (CBD).

During a recent site inspection with engineers and members of the Government Delivery Unit, Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff for Performance and Delivery Management, emphasized the broader significance of the initiative.

“This isn’t just a tunnel—it represents Nairobi’s evolution into a modern, people-first city,” Owalo remarked. “We’re building an urban experience, not just a shortcut.”

The underpass will provide a secure pedestrian route connecting Uhuru Park, the Nairobi Railways Station, and Haile Selassie Avenue to the CBD.

Modeled after sophisticated underground pathways in global cities like London, the corridor will be outfitted with bright lighting, retail spaces, CCTV monitoring, and hygienic, accessible walkways.

Once operational, the underpass is expected to significantly reduce pedestrian-vehicle collisions and improve overall traffic circulation at one of Nairobi’s most congested intersections.
