Mason Greenwood delivered a decisive performance as Marseille overturned an early setback to defeat Union Saint Gilloise 3 to 2 and strengthen their push for a place in the Champions League knockout rounds.
The English forward struck twice and proved the difference in a match that swung repeatedly before settling in favour of Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
Union SG stunned the home crowd after only five minutes. Anan Khalaili drifted in from the right and shaped a precise low effort into the bottom right corner.
Marseille responded quickly. Ten minutes later Igor Paixao reacted first when Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s shot was parried into his path, driving his finish high into the net.
Greenwood put Marseille ahead four minutes before half time. Collecting the ball on the edge of the area, he fired a low strike that Kjell Scherpen reached but could not keep out.
Marseille carried that momentum into the second half and Greenwood extended the lead in the 58th minute. He broke in behind the defence, turned sharply and curled a fine finish into the bottom left corner.
Union SG refused to fade and were rewarded when Khalaili claimed his second goal, capitalising on a loose clearance to keep his side alive.
Their revival faltered, however, as two late goals were ruled out for offside. Kevin Mac Allister was denied first, and Promise David then saw a header chalked off in the closing stages.
Geronimo Rulli preserved Marseille’s victory with an excellent save deep into stoppage time, pushing away a close range header from David. The win keeps Marseille in control of their qualification hopes while leaving Union SG with an uphill task in the remaining fixtures.
