A suitor was left in awe after his father in law to be asked for something unheard off during the dowry negotiations. The man who is known as Hussein Maro from Tana River County asked for only 7 shillings from the groom’s side which left them confused not knowing what to do. – By Stephanie Mwangi.
“My fellow elders it is a great joy to have my daughter married in a good family therefore as my daughter and I had agreed we shall take seven shillings.” said the man
An uncle from the groom’s side said they were expecting a surprise as his nephew had told him earlier on the low bride price brought about so many questions insinuating that witchcraft was taking part.
“You know when you are used to a tradition where parents demand sweat from their son-in-law for educating a child such requests look like aspects of witchcraft so you have to be cautious.
When Maro’s wife was asked about the absurd bride price she said : “ if the man promises he will love, respect ,and take care of his daughter ,he weighs the words from his heart if he feels they are genuine he accepts if he feels they are not he will turn down the man .”
Dowry should never be the basis to prevent young men and women from getting life partners .
