Newcastle United returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, as Bruno Guimaraes’ spectacular strike and Nick Woltemade’s late penalty sealed three points and deepened the troubles for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
After a sluggish first half at St James’ Park, the hosts found their spark when Guimaraes unleashed a curling 25-yard effort past former Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels to open the scoring.
Forest, pinned back for much of the second half, offered little resistance and were undone again when Woltemade coolly converted from the spot after Elliot Anderson tripped Guimaraes in the box. The German forward had earlier rattled the crossbar and was rewarded for his persistence with his third goal in as many Premier League home appearances.
Sels, one of Forest’s few bright spots, produced several excellent saves to deny Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, while Newcastle’s defence limited the visitors to half-chances.
The result leaves Forest winless in their opening four league games under Postecoglou, marking the club’s worst start to a season since 1960. Newcastle, meanwhile, continue their dominance over Forest, extending their winning streak in the fixture to four matches.
