The much-anticipated FKF Premier League clash between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia FC ended in chaos at Gusii Stadium, overshadowing the 1-1 draw with disturbing scenes of fan violence that left 72 people injured.
According to an official statement from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the injured were treated at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, RAM Hospital, Hema Hospital, and Christamarianne Hospital. Fortunately, no fatalities have been confirmed.
Disturbing scenes of fans clashing, property damage, and stampedes marred the match, prompting condemnation from FKF and renewed concerns over safety at sporting events. “Football must remain a sport that brings people together – not one that puts lives at risk,” FKF said in its release. The federation emphasized that fan, player, and official safety remains a top priority.
The cause of the unrest remains unclear. However, FKF has pledged to work closely with police and stadium authorities to determine the root of the violence. Disciplinary action will be taken against those found responsible.
FKF also appealed to the public and media to avoid spreading unverified reports, especially claims of deaths, which they say are inaccurate.
This incident raises pressing questions about crowd control, stadium security, and the role of fan behavior in the beautiful game. As investigations continue, the nation watches closely, hoping for swift action to preserve the integrity of Kenyan football.
The Federation has promised timely updates as more information becomes available.
