Hakimi To Feature Morocco’s Last AFCON Group Match

African player of the year Achraf Hakimi is set to make his first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations when hosts Morocco face Zambia on Monday, coach Walid Regragui has confirmed, ending weeks of anticipation over the right back’s fitness.

Hakimi has yet to feature at the tournament after suffering an ankle injury while playing for Paris Saint Germain in early November. He was an unused substitute in Morocco’s opening two Group A matches as the medical staff managed his recovery cautiously.

Speaking in Rabat on Sunday, Regragui said the defender’s return was the result of an extraordinary effort. He confirmed that Hakimi will play against Zambia, although he stopped short of saying whether the 26 year old would start. Either way, it will be Hakimi’s first outing at this year’s Cup of Nations.

Morocco opened their campaign with a 2 0 victory over Comoros before being held to a 1 1 draw by Mali on Friday. Those results leave the hosts top of Group A with four points from two matches. A win against Zambia would secure first place in the group, while a draw would also be enough to guarantee qualification for the knockout stage.

Regragui acknowledged that Morocco have coped without their captain but admitted the team is transformed by Hakimi’s presence. He described the full back as the side’s leader and the best player in Africa, adding that his influence extends well beyond his position on the pitch.

Hakimi, who helped Paris Saint Germain win the Champions League last season, said it had been difficult watching from the sidelines. He also expressed disappointment at sections of the home crowd who booed the team during the draw with Mali, urging supporters to remain patient and united.

Drawing on his experience in Paris, Hakimi said success comes when fans stand behind the team, even during difficult moments. He added that he hopes Morocco’s supporters will rally behind the squad as they chase continental glory on home soil.
