Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has hit out at recent Italian media speculation suggesting unrest within the Ferrari camp, calling the reports “total nonsense” and reaffirming his commitment to the team and its principal, Fred Vasseur.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, a race he has won seven times, Hamilton strongly denied claims that he is reconsidering his future with Ferrari or that Vasseur’s job is at risk.
“To everyone that’s writing stories of me considering not racing, I’ve literally only just started with Ferrari,” said Hamilton. “I’m here for several years. I’m here for the long haul. There are zero doubts, so please, stop making up stuff.”
Hamilton joined Ferrari this season as a marquee signing in hopes of returning the legendary team to title contention. However, after nine races, Ferrari trails McLaren by 197 points in the constructors’ standings, with both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc yet to win a race.
Despite the disappointing start, Hamilton emphasized his confidence in Vasseur’s leadership. “Fred’s the main reason I’m in this team. I love working with him. We’re in this together, and I want Fred here. I believe he is the person to take us to the top,” he said.
When asked directly if Vasseur’s exit was imminent, Hamilton replied, “I don’t think that’s on the cards as far as I’m aware, and it’s certainly not something I would be supportive of.”
Carlos Sainz, who was replaced by Hamilton at Ferrari and now drives for Williams, also came to Vasseur’s defense. “Same story as always,” said Sainz. “The moment results don’t click at Ferrari, the media starts finger-pointing and creating chaos.” Despite the tough transition, Sainz said he maintains a good relationship with Vasseur.
With the Canadian Grand Prix set to take place this weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Hamilton made it clear that his focus remains on building Ferrari into a winning team: “I’m here to win with Fred, and he has my full support.”
