Hand Of God: Koome Speaks On Supreme Ruling

Koome added that other countries in Africa and beyond the continent are keen to emulate Kenya's institutions' independence.

Chief Justice Martha Koome praised the judiciary’s independence after the seven-judge bench unanimously approved William Ruto’s election as President-elect.

Speaking during her late aunt, Ms. Salome Maingi Gakii, funeral in Mwiteria, Imenti North, Meru county on Wednesday, September 7, Koome termed Monday’s decision as “the work of God”, saying the judges’ ruling happened after God’s intervention.

“This (judgment) was for the sake of independence of institutions, especially the Judiciary. It was not due to our might or power as a court but because of the faithful God that we serve,” she said.

Koome added that other countries in Africa and beyond the continent are keen to emulate Kenya’s institutions’ independence.

According to the Chief Justice, other leaders are borrowing a leaf from Kenya’s governance and leadership systems, where there is no interference between the different arms of government.

“We are being respected now not only in the region but even in the whole world. They are looking upon Kenya for leadership and also for independent institutions, especially the institution of Judiciary,” she stated.

“This is not because of my power, but this is because of the faithful God that I serve,” Koome added.

Her remarks came just days after the Supreme Court dismissed all petitions challenging Ruto’s victory as being without merit.

All of the judges agreed that the petitions filed by Azimio la Umoja Presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua did not meet the standard required to force the annulment of the August 9 Presidential Election.
