Harvard Sues Trump Administration Over Funding Freeze

Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, escalating a fierce battle over federal funding, institutional independence, and political interference in higher education.

The legal action comes in response to sweeping demands from the administration, which has frozen over $2.2 billion in research grants and contracts. The government is seeking access to all internal reports concerning antisemitism and anti-Muslim bias on Harvard’s campus, dating back to October 2023, including confidential drafts and the identities of contributors.

In a statement, Harvard President Alan M. Garber condemned the federal intervention, saying the administration’s pressure tactics jeopardize essential medical, scientific, and technological research. “These actions have stark real-life consequences… and violate the university’s constitutional rights,” Garber wrote in a letter to the Harvard community.

The administration has linked its actions to campus unrest over the Israel-Hamas war, arguing that elite universities must address antisemitism and align more closely with “merit-based” policies. However, critics argue that the White House’s conditions — including eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and banning masks at protests — are part of a broader ideological crackdown.

Harvard maintains it does not seek monetary damages but instead wants the courts to declare the government’s actions unlawful. The suit emphasizes that the frozen research has no direct connection to antisemitism and that academic freedom is under attack.

As the standoff escalates, other institutions like Princeton and Cornell have also seen funding interrupted. The case is poised to become a landmark moment in the ongoing struggle over the autonomy of American universities.
