Hassan Omar Withdraws From Speaker’s Race, Backs Kingi

Omar wrote on Facebook that the decision came after much deliberation with President-elect William Ruto and other Kenya Kwanza coalition leaders.

Hassan Omar, a former Mombasa Governor candidate, has dropped his bid for Senate Speaker in favor of former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi.

Omar wrote on Facebook that the decision came after much deliberation with President-elect William Ruto and other Kenya Kwanza coalition leaders.

“Following lengthy deliberations with H.E William Samoei Ruto and other Kenya Kwanza leaders yesterday, we agreed that H.E Amason Kingi be fronted as the coalition’s candidate for Senate Speaker in keeping with the spirit of coalition partnership,” he said on Wednesday.

“I have no objection to this considering that this position was reserved for the Coast and hereby withdraw my candidature for Senate Speaker.”

“I trust that all senators will support my brother Kingi as the sole Kenya Kwanza candidate as so agreed upon by all of us.”

Omar was among 15 people who had picked up applications for the position of Senate speaker including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

However, Kalonzo has since dropped his bid for Senate and National Assembly speaker positions.

The election will take place tomorrow, Thursday, after the newly elected MPs are sworn in at the first sitting of the 13th Parliament.
