Hate Speech Charges Dropped Against MP Salasya Following Successful Peace Initiative

Senior Resident Magistrate Paul Mutai ruled that Salasya had met all conditions of an out-of-court agreement with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

On February 2, 2026, the Milimani Magistrate’s Court formally cleared Mumias East MP Peter Salasya of hate speech charges after he successfully completed a court-ordered reconciliation process.

Senior Resident Magistrate Paul Mutai ruled that Salasya had met all conditions of an out-of-court agreement with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

The MP provided evidence of actively engaging in peace initiatives that reached over 1,000 people.

As part of the 14-day directive issued on January 19, Salasya conducted a public apology and a sustained social media campaign promoting national cohesion.

The charges originated from inflammatory remarks Salasya posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account in May 2025, which were deemed likely to incite ethnic hatred.

While the court initially declined to drop the case in January due to a lack of proof, it was satisfied with the formal evidence of compliance presented during the February 2 mention.
