Hate Spewing Leaders To Face Special Courts

Chief Justice Martha Koome, NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia.

Politicians courting hate speech and war among Kenyans have been put on notice by the Judiciary.

The Special Hate Speech courts are expected to focus on matters surrounding political statements that incite violence in the run-up to the 2022 General Elections.

This was announced during a consultative meeting between Chief Justice Martha Koome and members of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) led by the Chairperson, Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia.

The Judiciary has already prepared a list of special magistrates to be gazetted to hear and determine cases under the Election Offences Act once the poll period has been declared by the IEBC.

The Special Hate Speech Courts will be set up in Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nakuru and Kisumu.

They will complement the Election Dispute Resolution process to ensure focused attention and timely resolution of cases touching on hate speech.

NCIC had come up with a list of shame that contains politicians who made inciteful comments. The organization has vowed to seek legal procedures to bar such individuals from accessing political offices.
