The Ministry of Health in Kenya has issued new directives following the death of Lucy Wambui, allegedly due to a botched plastic surgery.Â
On Wednesday, November 6, Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni directed health regulatory agencies to conduct a thorough assessment of the facility and the medical staff involved.
According to a statement, the Kenya Health Professional Oversight Authority (KHPOA) will lead the investigation, with a comprehensive report due within 30 days.
Muthoni emphasized that the move aims to prevent similar incidents and ensure accountability within the healthcare sector.
The directive includes inspections of other similar facilities to verify their compliance with health standards, aiming to enhance patient safety across the country.
This action follows an investigation by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dental Council (KMPDC), which found the facility in violation of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, citing malpractice and non-compliance.
The facility, which initially distanced itself from wrongdoing, is currently closed pending further investigation.
Its owners, however, have appealed, claiming full compliance and advanced equipment.
Wambui’s death has sparked public outrage, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua calling for stronger protections against unsafe medical practices.
