Kenya continues to record more cases of the coronavirus, even as citizens await more directives to be issued in the coming week – By Gerald Gekara
So far, out of 165,196 tests carried out, a total of 6,070 people have turned out positive.
In the recent statistics, the health ministry led by CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi confirmed a total of 257 cases. This was out of 2,718 samples taken for testing in the last 24 hours.
All the positive cases are Kenyans, except three (3) who are foreigners, with 159 being males and 100 females. The youngest is an 8 month old infant and the oldest is 92 years.
In Nairobi, Westlands continues to lead with (31) cases, Dagoretti North (22), Makadara (12), Embakasi East & Langata, 11 cases each, Starehe (7), Roysambu (6), and Kasarani (5). Embakasi South, Kamukunji & Kibra registered (4) cases each, Embakasi West (3), while Embakasi Central, Embakasi North & Mathare, registered (2) cases each. Dagoretti South had 1 case.
Other counties that registered cases include Mombasa, 39, Kiambu, 22, Machakos, 16, Busia 11, Makueni, (9), Nakuru, (9), Uasin Gishu, (9), Kilifi, (5), Kajiado, (3), Kisumu, (2), Lamu, (2) Garissa (2), Marsabit, (2), & Kwale, (1) case.
Thirty-five patients were also discharged, further raising Kenya’s total recovered patients tally to 1,971.
However, Two more patients died of the virus bringing the total fatalities to 143.
While addressing speculations of possible reopening, Health CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi pushed the ball to the county health teams’ court. She said that counties hold the key to stopping inter community spread by ensuring that all health care systems were ready to handle cases.
So far, the ministry has alleged that it has trained a total of 65,000 health workers in Covid-19 management, saying that more frontline workers need to be deployed to contain the looming peak of coronavirus spread.
