Kenyan health workers are calling on Parliament to impeach the Chairperson and CEO of the Social Health Authority (SHA), whom they accuse of being the primary obstacles to the effective implementation of SHA insurance.
Speaking at Kenya Methodist University in Meru during International White Coat Day celebrations, Peterson Wachira, National Chair of the Kenya Health Workers Caucus, said the two leaders are hindering SHA’s rollout.
Wachira urged Parliament to take action and impeach Chairperson Dr. Abdi Mohamed and CEO Mr. Robert Ingasira if the Ministry of Health is unwilling or unable to replace them.
He accused both officials of violating four key constitutional provisions: Article 43, which guarantees all Kenyans access to healthcare; Article 26, which speaks against discrimination, including that faced by clinical officers and citizens unable to access services; Article 47, which ensures fair administrative procedures; and Chapter 6, which addresses ethics and integrity.
Health workers also expressed frustration that the two SHA leaders have ignored a directive from the Deputy President requiring that all clinical officers be empaneled to provide services under SHA. The directive, they noted, remains unimplemented more than a week after it was issued.
In addition, more than 5,000 medical interns voiced their disappointment over the government’s continued delay in placing them in internship positions.
