A section of the Kabarnet-Eldama Ravine Road became impassable on Monday morning after heavy rainfall caused massive cracks and landslides.
The downpour, which lasted through Sunday night, resulted in significant damage to the major highway, raising concerns about further landslides.
Motorists were advised to exercise extreme caution as the rain continued, increasing the risk of additional landslides. The widening cracks on the road have rendered the stretch hazardous for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The landslide occurred in the early hours of Monday, fortunately when traffic was minimal, preventing any accidents.
The most affected area is the section heading to Kabarnet town through Tenges, as reported by the local Member of County Assembly (MCA).
This stretch is currently impassable due to extensive cracks and debris, including rocks and mud. The landslide has severely impacted regions such as Sacho, Tenges, Sirwo, Kapropita, Talai, and Sumeiyon.
Local leaders have warned residents of potential mudslides, structural damage to houses, and sunken roadbeds.
Previously, on May 15, the national government had cautioned Baringo residents about the risk of landslides due to heavy rainfall.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is expected to provide an alternative route for motorists while repairs are underway.
