Busia authorities have destroyed heroin and bhang with a combined street value of over Sh21 million, signalling a strong stance against drug trafficking in the region.
The destruction was carried out under a court order at the Alupe Sub-County Hospital Incinerator, overseen by Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti.
Approximately 3,936 grams of heroin, valued at around Sh11,808,000, were incinerated. The consignment had been seized from Mumbi Mwaura, who was convicted by the Busia Law Court and fined Sh50 million or sentenced to 50 years in prison in default of payment on March 18, 2025.
In addition, 337.2 kilograms of bhang, estimated to be worth Sh10,116,000, were also destroyed.
The exercise was witnessed by a multi-agency team including officers from the National Police Service, National Environment Management Authority, Public Health, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Forest Service, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and both county and sub-county security teams.
Speaking during the incineration, officials emphasised the government’s commitment to combating the cultivation, production, distribution, and sale of narcotic drugs in Kenya. They noted that such destruction exercises are vital in reinforcing the rule of law and deterring drug-related crimes.
The event also served as a public demonstration of accountability and inter-agency cooperation, with multiple authorities participating to ensure transparency and proper handling of the seized narcotics.
The destruction underscores Kenya’s ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and the illegal narcotics trade, which continues to pose social, economic, and security challenges across the country.
