The High Court Of Kenya has issued orders restraining the Kenyan Government from deploying police officer to the Republic of Haiti or any other Country pending the hearing of a petition challenging the entire exercise.
Delivering the orders, Justice E.C Mwita directed that the pleadings be served on the respondents immediately.
“That a conservatory order is hereby issued restraining the respondents from deploying police officers to Haiti or any other country until 24th October 2023,” directed the judge.
The orders suspending police deployment to Haiti follows a petition by Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot against President William Ruto and his administration in a bid to impede an impending peacekeeping mission for the deployment of at least 1,000 police officers to a nation he claimed is plagued by rampant gang activity.
According to his petition before the High Court, Kenya’s pursuit to lead a UN-approved force into the Caribbean island nation constitutes a gross violation of the Constitution.
Aukot while directing his criticism towards President Ruto, said that the President stands accused of strategizing deployment of police officers outside Kenya, an action that transpires when domestic forces have failed in their attempts to suppress tribal violence specifically within Lamu County, where members of one community have been targeted for death.
