High Court: Elders can end dispute pitting Gov. Mwangaza, MCAs

In what appears to be a dispute of its own, today Meru High Court invoked ADR provisions and referred Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment case to Njuri Ncheke for alternative dispute resolution.

Njuri Ncheke is the supreme governing council of elders for the Meru people of Kenya. Also filling a judicial role, it is the apex of the Meru traditional judicial system and their edicts apply across the entire community.

The Court directed Governor Mwangaza and her advocates to appear before the supreme governing council of elders on Wednesday, July 31.

On the other hand, Njuri Ncheke has been ordered to submit their resolution or lack of it in the dispute not later than 3 weeks from today, Monday, July 29.

The direction by the Court comes after Meru County Assembly on Friday stopped debating the impeachment motion against Governor Mwangaza following a High Court order issued on Wednesday temporarily halting the proceedings until the court provides further directions.

The ruling was precipitated by a petition challenging the planned impeachment motion on grounds that the proposal is being instigated by her political adversaries.
