Businessman Jimi Wanjigi was released on a Ksh 10 million bond by the High Court in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon following his arrest on Monday, August 19.
The court also ordered Wanjigi to surrender all his travel documents, including his passports, as he awaits the court’s ruling on charges of illegal firearm possession.
Wanjigi, a well-known figure in Kenya’s business circles, is accused of owning six firearms illegally.
However, he challenged the prosecution, arguing that a previous court order had already addressed the matter.
The court has scheduled a hearing for September 12, 2024, to further deliberate on the case.
Wanjigi’s release comes just a day after he was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection with the Nane Nane protests.
Speaking to the press outside the DCI headquarters, Wanjigi condemned his arrest, labeling it illegal and accusing law enforcement agencies of disregarding court orders.
“The DCI has illegally arrested me despite numerous court orders barring the same arrest,” Wanjigi asserted.
The case continues to attract public attention as it unfolds in the coming weeks.
