High Court overturns Sonko’s acquittal in Sh24m corruption case

The High Court has set aside the acquittal of former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko in the Sh24 million corruption case.

Today Justice Nixon Sifuna in revoking Sonko’s short-lived relief from the Criminal Justice System, said the case would be retried by a Magistrate other than the then-trial Magistrate Douglas Ogoti who had acquitted Sonko.

According to Justice Sifuna, the new trial Magistrate will make a fresh ruling based on the evidence that’s already on the record on whether Sonko together with his Co-accused persons have a case to answer.

The ruling, he said, should be made within 30 days of today’s ruling.

Sonko had been accused of embezzling funds from the county government by awarding dubious contracts.

The money was allegedly wired back to his accounts and deposited in various parts of the country.
