Nairobi, Kenya — The High Court is today expected to issue directions in the ongoing habeas corpus application concerning the disappearance of blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia, amid mounting pressure on security agencies to account for his whereabouts.
The development follows a directive issued on Monday, June 30, by Justice Chacha Mwita, compelling Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to either produce Kinyagia in court or provide a credible explanation regarding his disappearance.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) filed the petition as concerns continue to grow over the alleged abduction of Kinyagia, who was reportedly seized by masked, unidentified individuals driving unmarked vehicles outside his Kinoo apartment on June 21. He has not been seen since.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International and activist Boniface Mwangi, have demanded Kinyagia’s immediate release, terming his disappearance a grave violation of human rights.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied holding the blogger but admitted he is a person of interest linked to controversial social media posts. DCI boss Mohamed Amin confirmed that officers conducted a search at Kinyagia’s residence and seized electronic devices but claimed he was not found.
The High Court had ordered the Inspector General to file all relevant responses by today, after which Justice Mwita is expected to provide further directions on the matter.
