A former course mate and high school friend of Erick Phillip Mutinda, the suspect in the MMU murder case, has told the Kibera Law Courts that Mutinda allegedly confessed to killing Sylvia by strangulation during a phone call made on Thursday,3, April,2025.

Testifying before the Kibera Law Court, the state witness said Mutinda told him he strangled Sylvia, placed her body in a suitcase and carried it through the rear of Block E, an area the witness said has two CCTV coverage.

“When Erick called me, he said that he was the one who killed Sylvia by strangulation, holding her neck tightly, packed her in a suitcase, and took her to his room,” he told the court.

According to the testimony, Mutinda further allegedly asked him to keep the information secret and said he planned to flee to Tanzania using his father’s car.

The witness further told the court that after receiving the call, he contacted Mutinda’s brother and urged him to advise Erick to surrender to the police if he was innocent.

During cross-examination, the witness acknowledged that he had known Mutinda since high school and described him as calm, bright and friendly during their school years.

He also agreed that some of the discussions between him and Mutinda about the matter could be viewed as speculative.

However, under re-examination, the witness clarified his position, insisting that Mutinda explicitly told him that he had strangled Sylvia and transported her body in a suitcase through the back door of Block E.

The hearing continues on March 16th as the court evaluates the key testimony alongside other evidence in the case.
