Hilary Mutyambai, the Inspector General of Police, was still in critical condition in hospital on Sunday after falling ill, prompting him to appoint his deputy Noor Gabow to act as the police chief.

Those who saw him at the Aga Khan Hospital’s High Dependence Unit said doctors were performing various tests on him before deciding what to do next.

The HDU is a specialized ward that offers intensive care (treatment and monitoring) to critically ill patients.

Mutyambai stated that he will be out of the office beginning August 26 for a medical checkup.

The IG commands the service independently. He may perform functions or exercise powers in person or delegate them to any police officer below him in rank.

In cases where the IG is suspended from office or unable to perform his duties, the President may appoint someone else to do so.

Mutyambai has delegated his mandate for medical reasons several times during his tenure.

When he became ill in 2020, he delegated his duties to DIG Kenya Police Edward Mbugua.
