Historic Bid in Minnesota: Huldah Hiltsley Aims to Make Waves as First Kenyan-born Legislator

In a groundbreaking campaign that could change the face of American politics, Huldah Hiltsley, a Kenyan-born immigrant, is poised to become the first of her kind elected to a state legislature in the United States.

Running for the Minnesota House of Representatives District 38A under the Democratic banner, Hiltsley’s candidacy is a testament to the power of diversity and representation.

Born in Nyamira County, Kenya, and raised in Minnesota, Hiltsley’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Boasting an impressive educational background that includes three Bachelor’s degrees and a Master’s from Bethel University, she has dedicated her life to public service.

Married to American Bart Hiltsley, she brought her dedication to community into full swing with the launch of her nonprofit, SaniNaps, aimed at enhancing public health resources.

As she competes against Republican Brad Olson, who champions limiting taxation and government regulations, Hiltsley focuses on pivotal issues such as public safety, affordable housing, and education.

“Our campaign is deeply rooted in local needs,” says Hiltsley, underscoring her commitment to making a tangible impact in the community. “Everyone deserves to feel safe and have access to solid education and thriving local businesses.”

District 38A has transformed significantly since its redistricting in 2020, now reflecting a vibrant mix of cultures with 33% Black, 18% Asian, 9% Hispanic, and 38% white residents.

This shift signals a historical moment not only for Hiltsley but for all underrepresented voices seeking leadership in a changing landscape.

After a competitive primary election that saw her emerge victorious against Wynfred Russell, Huldah is now enlisting the support of independent and swing voters, promising a collaborative approach in the legislature to foster unity and effectiveness.
