HIV Patients Panic Over Expired ARV Drugs

Despite the shipment’s clearance from the port of Mombasa, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has yet to release a significant consignment of ARV medicine to Kenya’s government.

Due to a lack of licenses from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has revealed that 13 containers of the consignment are yet to be processed at the port (PPB).

As the standoff between the Ministry of Health and USAID drags on, the most pressing concern is that some of the medications’ expiration dates are approaching.

KRA reported in a meeting with the National Assembly Health Committee about the push and pull that it has cleared 7840 foot containers and 120 foot containers of medical supplies consigned to Chemonics since January 2021.

Just 13 containers are currently awaiting customs clearance at the Mombasa container terminal transit shed; these containers, which arrived between February 5 and March 5, carry HIV self-testing kits and HIV drugs.
