A househelp has been arrested in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa estate for allegedly stealing a safe containing a Glock pistol and Ksh.348,000 from her employer.
Marydina Anupi John, 43, is accused of breaking into her employer’s bedroom on the evening of November 3, when he had stepped out. The safe reportedly contained cash in Kenyan shillings, US dollars, and Euros, as well as a Glock 19 pistol with two magazines and 44 rounds of ammunition.
Detective Simon Ihaji from Kilimani Police Station told Kibera Magistrate’s Court that John, who had worked for the employer for over two years, switched off her phone and disappeared after the alleged theft. Police later tracked her to a hideout in Kawangware.
Authorities say investigations point to the involvement of other accomplices. Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing loaded Glock, which remains unaccounted for.
Principal Magistrate Margret Murage ordered that John remain in police custody until November 24, 2025, giving detectives time to prepare a charge sheet and pursue additional arrests if necessary.
“The respondent will therefore be detained at Kilimani Police Station for seven days only, until the 24th, and on this date, I expect a charge sheet to be ready,” Magistrate Murage said.
Police are continuing to piece together details of the case, which has raised concerns over the circulation of firearms and the safety of households across Nairobi.
