How Much Liverpool Bagged From Champions League Run

After Real Madrid defeated Liverpool in the Champions League final, the Reds missed out on a record £93 million in UEFA prize money.

Jurgen Klopp’s team received £89.2 million in prize money as a result of their journey to the final, but they missed out on an extra £3.8 million due to their defeat to Real Madrid. They also missed out on a £3 million bonus for playing in the Super Cup versus Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt in August.

The prize money for the Reds is still big, but it pales in contrast to that of the winners, Real Madrid, who have been awarded a staggering £105.8 million thanks to a stronger 10-year coefficient – which gives them a better chance of winning.

A breakdown of the prize money won by Liverpool is as follows:

  • All 32 clubs to qualify for the group stages received a base payment of €15.6m (£13.1m) after earning another payment based on their ten-year coefficient (for Liverpool that was worth €22.7m [£19.3m].
  • Group stage wins were worth an additional €2.8m (£2.4m) with draws earning clubs €930,000 (£784,000).
  • Reaching the round of 16 earned an additional €9.6m (£8.1m)
  • Quarter-finalists made €10.6m (£9m)
  • Making the last four is worth €12.5m (£10.5m)
  • And the finalists receive €15.5m (£13.1m) with €4.5m (£3.8m) for the champions

Champions Chelsea brought home £70 million as a result of their Champions League victory, while Manchester City, the losing finalist, took home £60 million.

The Champions League’s prize money is still much more than the Europa League’s. West Ham, for example, made £38 million this season through their journey to the Europa League semi-finals.
