How PBC fixed Kangundo Road potholes

Before the launch of the Performance-Based Contract (PBC), Kangundo Road was a hotbed of potholes.

Motorists could spend more than 3 hours to drive from the Outering- Kangundo road junction to Njiru, a distance of less than 10 kilometers.

But since the road was placed on a PBC contract in October 2019, all the potholes have since been fixed and the road fully widened.

The PBC project cleared the road reserve, created stages for public service vehicles and clear inlets to Mama Lucy Hospital, Komarocks Estate, Umoja 1, 2 and 3, Kayole and Njiru.

The contractor has also ensured that all illegal buildings located on the road reserves have been cleared to pave way for road maintanance and safety.

Upgraded Nairobi East suburbs

The upgraded road is a major boost to the affordable housing plan, as part of the Big 4 agenda being undertaken by the Government.

Kangundo Road is the artery to popular and emerging residential areas such as Njiru, Saika, Ruai, Kamulu, Malaa, Utawala, Eastern Bypass, and the iconic Komarock Shrine.

The road has also opened up the upmarket Mua Hills settlement and created various special economic zones along the way.

The PBC initiative has led to improvement of security especially along the sprawling Kayole and Chokaa areas by erecting street lights along the road.

The Ministry of Roads and Infrastructure has signed compelling performance targets with KeNHA, KURA and KeRRA to ensure Kenyan roads are maintained to the highest standards.

Most of the PBC funding has been financed by funds derived from the fuel development levy.

Among other key roads that have been placed on performance contracts include Langata Road and the Thika Super Highway.

Most of the PBC firms are owned by youth and people with disabilities.
