The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced “Shuru,” a WhatsApp-based chatbot AI that allows taxpayers to file returns and access tax services directly from their phones.
The service enables users to complete their tax obligations without visiting KRA offices or logging into the iTax portal.
To get started, users need to save the official KRA WhatsApp number (0711 099 999) and send a message such as “Hi” to activate the chatbot.
Once the chat begins, users can select the “File Tax Returns” option from the menu and proceed to verify their identity by entering their KRA PIN and national ID number. A one-time password (OTP) is then sent to the registered phone number for confirmation.
After verification, the system displays pre-filled details, including income, employer information and deductions. Users are required to review the information and make corrections where necessary before submitting the return.
For those with no income, the chatbot allows filing of NIL returns. In this case, users select the option indicating no income, confirm that earnings are zero and proceed to submit.
KRA requires all registered taxpayers to file returns annually, including those who did not earn any income. The filing deadline is typically June 30.
Failure to file returns, including NIL returns, may result in penalties, while filing NIL returns remains free of charge.
The Shuru chatbot is aimed at simplifying tax compliance by offering a faster and more accessible way for Kenyans to manage their tax obligations through WhatsApp.
